Baby Blessing and Naming Ceremonies

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
Kahlil Gibran

From the beginning of time, throughout the world, the birth of a child has been seen as a time of rejoicing, a time for ritual and thanksgiving, a time for gathering of the family and the community. People come together to celebrate this precious new life, and all the fresh promise and hopes the child embodies.

A ceremony of blessing and naming is a delightful way to mark the birth and to call forth love and support for the infant, from family and friends. It is generally the parents who approach me for such a ceremony.

As an Interfaith Minister, I will bless your child spiritually, if this is your wish. At the same time, you may welcome this opportunity to consciously commit to the love and nurture of this tender being – godparents or grandparents too may play their part in this aspect of the ceremony. The child will also be formally named in the presence of friends and family. Gifts of many kinds may be offered.

As with all my ceremonial ministry, this special occasion will be inspired with your own spiritual beliefs, your own suggestions, favourite words, music and ritual. I will offer ideas and will help to involve all those who will be most important in this child’s young life. A Baby Blessings may be held in the quiet privacy of your own home, with just a few loved ones present, or you may wish to assemble in a more public room or chapel. Wherever this is to be, it will be a time of thanksgiving, blessing and celebration among family and friends.

In my experience, the baby often brings a new sense of harmony, joy and unity of purpose to a family or group of friends … in this way the child herself/himself becomes The Blessing!

Yours will be a unique ceremony of welcome to your child, lovingly crafted and personalised, reflective of your family, your values and your beliefs.
